This week we were super lucky this Friday. When we were superstars and had finished off ALL of our for the week, Miss Jenkins took us outside to use some of our stars. We were allowed on the new school field to go and do some activities around the garden. In our bird week we had discovered that we were missing a huge amount of birds (both species and number). So we decided that not only did we need to make and maintain new bird feeders throughout this year, we also needed to encourage more insects for those birds that are insectivores. We thought as we already had lots of wildflower planting plans we could also ‘revamp’ our bug hotel, which was looking a little neglected after us not being able to get to it for a couple of years. First we did some gardening jobs, cutting back the raspberry canes and clearing the dead grass and sticky weed. We then collected these brilliant hotel building materials to create lovely new homes for our insects.

Kevin McCloud would be proud!

We really enjoyed feeling the grass under our feet! Once we had finished we thought we’d have a little nose in our ponds and see what we could see. We spotted tonnes of snails, some freshwater hoglice, lots of frogspawn and even spotted a newt!! On the way back we noticed all the beautiful spring flowers and Miss Jenkins let us help pick a bunch for Ms Tranter to thank her for listening to us read all year. She was delighted! What a busy afternoon…
